How to Peel Dragon Fruit (and Creative Ways to Enjoy It)

Dragon fruit — also known as pitaya — is one of nature’s most eye-catching fruits. With its vibrant pink skin and speckled flesh, it’s a showstopper both on the cutting board and on the plate. But if you’ve never handled one before, its spiky, cactus-like exterior might leave you wondering: how do I peel and prepare dragon fruit properly? The good news is that it’s simple — especially with the right tools.

How to Peel Dragon Fruit

  1. Wash the fruit
Give the dragon fruit a quick rinse to remove any dirt or debris from the skin.

  2. Cut it in half
Place the fruit on a sturdy cutting board. Using a sharp Japanese knife like the Oishya Bunka or Kiritsuke, slice cleanly down the middle. The flesh inside may be white or deep magenta, depending on the variety.

  3. Scoop or peel

    • Scoop method: Use a spoon to scoop out the flesh, much like you would with an avocado.

    • Peel method: Gently separate the flesh from the skin with your fingers — it should come away easily in one piece if ripe.

  4. Slice to serve
From here, you can cube, slice, or even carve the fruit into creative shapes. A precise knife makes this easy and beautiful.

Creative Ways to Enjoy Dragon Fruit

  • As a tropical snack: Simply slice into wedges or cubes and serve chilled.

  • Dragon fruit “sashimi”: Plate thin slices like sashimi, garnished with mint or edible flowers.

  • Smoothie bowls: Blend with banana and mango, then top with granola and coconut flakes.

  • Fruit carpaccio: Slice paper-thin with a Kiritsuke, drizzle with honey or lime, and arrange on a platter.

  • Cocktail garnish: Cube or spear dragon fruit chunks for a refreshing and colourful drink topper.

  • Frozen treats: Freeze cubes on skewers for a natural popsicle.
