Why this kind of storage

Knife blocks with slots dull the edge. Magnetic strips look harsh in a kitchen. This solves both.

Slot blocks force the blade through a tight wooden channel every time you put a knife away. That channel dulls the edge.

This block uses concealed neodymium magnets inside a hand-finished hardwood face. The blade rests flat against the wood, held by the magnets inside, so the edge never touches anything. It holds up to seven knives with blades up to 27cm, sits flat on the counter and reads as a piece of furniture rather than a kitchen gadget.

Oak or American walnut, finished by hand with hardwax oil. Oak is rich in tannins, so dry your knives before putting them back: wet steel left against oak can mark it. The face carries the engraved Oishya logo, three Geisha fans, a family crest from the Edo period. Made in Poland by an independent woodworker we have worked with since 2023.

Where it is made

Poland. Made by hand, a few at a time.

Our racks and knife stand are made in Poland by an independent woodworker we have worked with since 2023. He cuts, routes and oils the wood himself, in oak or American walnut, and finishes it with hardwax oil.

Because the knife rests against the wood rather than being forced through a slot, the edge never meets anything that could dull it. Your knives stay in view, ready to grab.

Care, briefly

Oiled wood needs to be oiled.

01.

Wipe down weekly.

A barely-damp cloth, no soap. The magnets are sealed, but standing water on the wood will leave marks over the years.

02.

Re-oil twice a year.

A teaspoon of food-safe mineral or camellia oil on a cloth. Let it soak in, wipe off the excess. Brings the colour back.

03.

Keep knives dry before putting them up.

Don’t put a wet knife up. The magnet is strong enough to hold it, but moisture left there over time will mark the wood.

Frequently asked.

How strong is the magnet?
Strong enough to hold a full chef's knife securely, but the blade lifts off cleanly without dragging. It holds the knife, it doesn't fight you.
Will it scratch my knives?
No. The blade rests flat against the wood, not against the magnet directly, and the edge never touches anything.
Wall-mounted or freestanding?
Both are in the range. The wall racks fix to the wall with two screws; the freestanding stand just needs a flat surface.
How do I keep the wood looking new?
Wipe it down weekly with a barely-damp cloth and re-oil twice a year with food-safe oil. That's all it asks.
