Japanese Knife Sets as Gifts: Three Knives, One Box
A set equips a whole kitchen at once. Three knives from one line, sharpened and ready to use, in a hand-finished wooden box. It costs less than buying the three separately, and there is nothing to wrap.
What is in a set
Three Knives That Cover Almost Everything
A chef’s knife
A Gyuto, a Santoku or a Bunka, depending on the set. This is the knife that does most of the cutting: onions, herbs, meat, fish.
A Nakiri
A straight-edged vegetable knife. It cuts cleanly through squash, cabbage and carrots with a simple push.
A Petty
A small utility knife for work in the hand and on the board: shallots, garlic, fruit, trimming.
One line, one box
All three come from the same line, so they share a steel, a finish and a handle, and they sit together in one wooden box. Every knife is double-bevel, so a set suits left- and right-handed cooks alike.

Which Set to Give
KATA is the everyday line, three-layer VG10 with a hammered finish, and where most home cooks start. RYU is a 33-layer Damascus all-rounder. KYU is forged in Sakai, with 46 layers of hammered Damascus over an AUS10 core.
Compare the steels side by side on all six lines compared, or see every set on knife sets.
Giving a knife
What arrives
Every knife comes sharpened and ready to use, in its wooden box, with a certificate of authenticity and a five-yen coin. There is nothing to wrap.
The coin
There is an old belief that a knife given as a gift cuts the bond between giver and receiver. The answer is a coin: the receiver hands it back, so the knife counts as bought rather than given. Five yen in Japanese is go-en, which also means a good connection.
