Preparation before use

  • Wash both sides of your wooden kitchenware with a soft sponge and a kitchen mild detergent before your first use. Rinse it well. A wooden product impregnated with water has the effect to reduce getting food’s juice or smell into the wood while keeping original wooden scent for longer.
  • For oak and walnut products, the easiest and most efficient way to prevent your wood from splintering is to oil it with mineral oil or use beeswax. For more information, check out our article on Oiling your wooden kitchenware, why, how, what with and when?

Daily care and maintenance

  • After use, please wash your wooden item using a soft sponge with a kitchen mild detergent. Rinse it well, before wiping off any water to keep in dry condition.
  • When you sterilise, wash it with a kitchen mild detergent first, then pour boiling water over the wooden surface. If you don’t wash it before the disinfecting, smell of foods may remain.
  • If you use bleaching agent, impregnate the wood with water before applying the bleach to avoid getting the smell into the wood.
  • Avoid direct sunlight. Ideally, put your wooden kitchenware in an airy place in the shade when you dry outside. Direct sunlight may cause warps or cracks.
  • If darkening appears, wash the wooden surface using a sponge with a cleaner.
  • Dark areas and spots can be removed by polishing with 200 grit of sandpaper. You may also apply bicarbonate soda with water. Leave such mix on stained areas for a couple of hours, then rinse with water. Note that some stains cannot be removed perfectly depending on the depth of scratch or wear.
  • Avoid using a dishwasher or dryer for cleaning wooden items. Any harsh detergents or high temperature might cause serious damage, deterioration, warp and crack.

Precautions for Use

  • Since these products are made of natural wood, little warp may happen, depending on how humid your environment is. It is unavoidable due to characteristics of a material. If it happens, get the surface wet, then put the convex surface up and leave it for a couple of hours. It will be restored to an original condition.
  • Do not dry wooden items by putting them into a microwave or oven as they may crack.
  • Note that washing with a hard material like a scrubber might cause bruises on the wood surface.

Craftsmanship

Our Wooden Kitchen Utensils are handcrafted by a local European craftsman. Wood carving is one the oldest artforms of mankind. The handmade method of wood carving takes years to perfect, and like in the case of our craftsmen, it is a skill passed down from one generation to the next. In a world where this process is mostly machine-run and automated, we are proud to support those artisans who remain active today, keeping the art of wood carving alive.

Our craftsmen undergo an astonishing number of steps that make the process of making a single spoon last almost an entire day. These steps include carefully hollowing, fine-tuning, drying, sanding and oiling each spoon. With craftsmen having to repeat many steps to achieve a perfect shape and smooth finish.  Their dedication, time and precision behind each of these wooden utensils makes these truly one of a kind.
