Each mortar is cut from a single block of marble, so the veining is unique to your piece. No two are alike. The bowl is deep and gently curved for grinding herbs, spices and pastes, with a smooth interior that makes quick work of pestos and seasoning blends.
The hand-polished pestle has the heft to crush and grind without effort. It doubles as a handsome piece to leave out on the counter, and because it’s natural stone the pattern varies from one to the next.
Care: hand wash only, dry with a soft cloth.
The hands that make it
Seki. Nearly eight hundred years of blade-making.
Seki, in Gifu, has forged blades since the thirteenth century, first swords, then kitchen knives. The workshop we work with there forges five of our six lines.
The handle is made in Poland: a stabilised maple burl body and a bog oak ferrule, meeting the blade at a hand-fitted copper ring in an octagonal profile.

Sakai. Six hundred years of blade-making.
Sakai, in Osaka, is the birthplace of the traditional Japanese kitchen knife, a craft passed down for six hundred years from the methods used to forge samurai swords. KYU is forged there by a master blacksmith whose family has been at this work since 1927. We make his blades under the name Sakai Kyuba.
The steel is AUS10, folded into 46 hammered Damascus layers and hardened to HRC 62. Each blade passes through around two hundred and twenty steps over roughly three months; the hammering, finishing and sharpening are done by hand.

This marble mortar and pestle set exceeds expectations. The weight is substantial, providing excellent crushing power for spices and herbs. The marble is beautifully veined and the polishing is immaculate. The pestle fits comfortably in hand and the interior of the mortar has just the right texture for grinding. It’s become an indispensable tool in my kitchen for making fresh spice blends and pastes. After a month of regular use, it shows no signs of wear and has developed a lovely patina.

This is a piece of art! After researching marble stone to replace the smaller, cracked marble one that served me well for over 10 years, I decided upon this one because of the size, unusual square shape and a fairly reasonable price. My criteria included size, quality of materials and craftsmanship. I didn’t want something mass produce but rather something that will last me for years. And boy I wasn’t disappointed. I love this marble and currently I’m in the craze of making fresh pesto. Love the material and the shape. Will be buying more for gifts for my family.

The mortar is heavy but effective.

Perfect mortar and pestle set. The marble is beautiful and it works great for grinding spices.
